A week-long celebration of DIY music and culture with live music, talks, screenings and an exhibition at ArtHole, inspired by the 309 Punk Project.
Church of Noise runs at ArtHole from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, a week of DIY music, talks, screenings and an exhibition in Canton. It was put together by local artist S Mark Gubb, who drew on his time at the 309 Punk Project in Pensacola, Florida, one of America's oldest surviving punk houses. The whole thing takes its lead from the US punkhouse phenomenon that grew out of the 1970s scene and spread through the 80s and 90s, when houses became grassroots hubs of cheap shared accommodation, gig venues and spaces for creativity and activism.
The week opens on Monday 12 with a night of poets and poetry curated by Patrick Jones. Tuesday 13 is Noise in the Capital, a night of collaborative sets by South Wales noise artists Jon Ruddick & Jake A Griffiths, Kevin's Boys, Cariad X Pam Rose Cott and H'ST X Insatiable Wound, curated by J/S, followed by Joerg Steineck's film Lo Sound Desert. Wednesday 14 brings two screenings: Noise and Resistance and Build Your Own DIY Utopia: The 309 Punk Project and Rockaway Park. Thursday 15 is a hardcore show with Perp Walk, Raw Nerve, Circumvent and Cursed Body, curated by the Undod collective, plus the screening In Bed with Chris Needham. The week closes on Friday 16 with an artist talk and exhibition launch by Julia Gorton.

Among the guests is Gorton, a New York punk photographer and former creative director of the No Wave fanzine Beat It!, who brings her Portrait Studio project to Cardiff for the first time to photograph the city's contemporary subcultural scene. The screenings include Steineck's documentary on the Californian desert rock scene that produced Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, and In Bed with Chris Needham, a cult film Kerrang! called "the greatest documentary ever made". The week also brings in the Cardiff Music History archive and the Red Shoes Poster Archive. Tickets are £5 in advance and £10 on the door, and the whole thing is held at ArtHole, Unit 3 Alexandra House, 307-315 Cowbridge Road East, Canton, Cardiff CF5 1JD.
