A guided tour of prehistoric ceramic vessels in the Archaeology store, led by curator Adam Gwilt, exploring Early Bronze Age burial practices.
National Museum Cardiff is opening up its archaeology store on Wednesday 25 November for a tour called Behind the Scenes: Prehistoric Pots and People. It's led by Adam Gwilt, the curator of the prehistoric archaeology collection at Amgueddfa Cymru, and it takes you past the galleries and into the store where the museum keeps the things that aren't on display.
The focus is on the complete ceramic vessels buried with people across Wales during the Early Bronze Age, around 4,000 years ago. These aren't just fragments; they're whole pots, richly decorated and varied in shape, that have survived since they were first placed in the ground. Gwilt describes them as revealing what the living and the dead meant to the families and communities that made and buried them, and explains how archaeologists use them to piece together Wales's distant prehistoric past. The whole thing is in English and is suitable for ages 12 and over.
