Southampton pop band Welly plays Cafe Kino in Bristol.
Welly play Cafe Kino on Saturday 17 October, presented by Crosstown Concerts. They're a pop band from Southampton, and this is their Bristol date for the night. Support is yet to be announced, so for now it's just them on the bill.
If you haven't come across them, the way they talk about their own sound gives you a fair idea of where they sit. They describe it as 'proper, spit-and-sawdust, chalk-and-cheese, salt-and-vinegar Pop' — a bit of a mouthful, but the sort of phrasing that suggests something unpretentious and rooted in the everyday rather than the polished. It's a very British way of putting it, and it fits with the genres they list: Indie Disco, Alternative, Indie and Pop. There's a dancey side to it in the disco tag, but the indie and alternative labels keep it firmly in the guitar-band territory.
Coming from Southampton, they're playing a bit away from home for this one, and the set will be built around that pop sensibility they're so specific about. It's the kind of gig that works just as well if you're there for the melodies as if you're there for the indie-disco side of things.
