A joyful dance adaptation of the picture book by Ezra Jack Keats, designed for children aged 1-5 and their grown-ups, with a stay and play session.
The Snowy Day opens at Bristol Old Vic on 28 November, running through to 3 January. It's a dance adaptation of the award-winning picture book by Ezra Jack Keats, and it's made specifically for the very young—ages one to five—and their grown-ups. The story follows a boy called Peter as he crunches through the snowy streets of his New York neighbourhood, and the whole thing is carried by a single dancer, original music, and an immersive, enchanting set. The production is described as intimate and icy, and it's staged with permission from the EJK Foundation.
It's a co-production between Polka Theatre and Can't Sit Still, with the role of Peter shared by Ashley Jordan and Jaheem Pinder. Catherine Boot directed and Laila Diallo choreographed. Because it's aimed at such a young crowd, there are a few thoughtful additions: a visual guide is available for anyone who'd like to know more about the performer, the lighting, and the sound before the show starts, and relaxed performances are also offered. Each show is followed by an optional ten-minute stay-and-play session, so you can hang around and let the little ones process what they've seen rather than rushing straight out the door.
