The Mountain Goats return with their theatrical song cycle 'Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan', supported by Craig Finn and The Band of Forgiveness.
The Mountain Goats play Beacon Hall on Friday 23 October, with support from Craig Finn and The Band of Forgiveness. It's a DHP presentation, and the night is for ages 14 and over, with under-18s to be accompanied by an adult.
The set is built around Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, a theatrical song cycle that John Darnielle says grew out of a dream and eventually became a full-blown musical. It's a narrative that follows a shipwreck, survival and revelation, told with the same wit and intensity that's always been at the heart of his songwriting. The band is working with lush arrangements and unexpected textures, so it's a bit of a departure from the leaner sound of their earlier records.
Darnielle is the storyteller here, leading a set that balances vivid narrative with soaring melody and raw emotion. The venue describes the night as "a night of storytelling, catharsis and connection" from one of indie rock's most beloved live acts. Craig Finn and The Band of Forgiveness open the bill, so there's a full evening of music rather than just the headliner.
