Concert by the legendary German electronic music band Tangerine Dream at the Trinity venue in Bristol.
Tangerine Dream play Trinity on Saturday 6 February, their first Bristol date in years. They're a Berlin electronic band, founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, and they've spent over five decades working with synthesiser and sequencer sounds. Their long instrumental tracks helped shape the 'Berlin School' and 'Kosmische Musik' styles, and the 1974 record Phaedra went gold in the UK and became a milestone in electronic music.
Over the last 50 years they've released more than 100 studio albums and composed over 60 soundtracks for film, TV and video games, including Sorcerer, Thief, Risky Business, Legend, Near Dark and the original score for Grand Theft Auto 5. They've been nominated for a Grammy seven times. Froese remained the only constant member until he died in 2015; the current line-up is Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and Paul Frick. Their recent albums, Quantum Gate and Raum, were built from Froese's musical sketches and ideas.
The Guardian described their music as 'an organic, ever-shifting and evolving sonic structure', and that's a fair way to sum up what they do. It's electronic music that doesn't sit still, built on the kind of long, unfolding textures they've been refining since the sixties. If you've never heard them, Phaedra is a good place to start.
