A Halloween-themed family workshop where children aged 8-14 build spooky cardboard characters and bring them to life with sound effects.
Richard Sewell is running a spooky family workshop at the Pervasive Media Studio on Thursday 29 October, right in the middle of the October half-term. It's aimed at young people aged 8 to 14 and their grown-ups, so it's one of those sessions you do together rather than dropping the kids off and heading for a coffee.
The whole thing is built around Halloween. The first half is the making part: you build a spooky character out of cardboard, and the second half is where you bring it to life with your own sound effects. They give a few examples of what you can go for — growling teeth, zombies, spindly spiders — and as you work, you'll pick up some construction techniques and a bit of simple technology along the way. It's as much about the making as it is about the sound.
Sewell is a Pervasive Media Studio resident, a roboticist and software engineer, and a co-founder of Airgiants, whose work focuses on the interactions between people and machines, experience design and play. That background comes through here, too: it's not just about sticking bits of cardboard together, but about how you use a bit of tech to give your creation a voice. The workshop is made possible with partners in the Pervasive Media Studio, the University of Bristol and UWE Bristol.
