Seb Rochford's Finding Ways live, with support from Fantastic Stranger, at Strange Brew.
Seb Rochford's Finding Ways play Strange Brew on Tuesday 13 October, with Fantastic Stranger on support. It's a double bill that sits right in the middle of Bristol's live jazz scene, which the city's guides tend to split into two halves: the international, concert-style nights at larger venues like Colston Hall and St Georges, and the organic, often free gigs in pubs and small rooms played by local musicians of international standard, at places like the Coronation Tap, the Old Duke and the Grain Barge. A new, multicultural outlook on jazz is said to be emerging from the city's young, adventurous music makers, and this night fits that second, more grassroots side of things.
Strange Brew itself is a new multi-room DIY art space, music venue and late-night bar in the heart of Bristol, near the Lanes and Rough Trade. It grew out of a successful crowdfunder campaign by the promoters behind the club night institution Dirtytalk, who set out to offer a mix of free bar events, art showings, gigs and club nights under a 3am licence. That late licence means it can run from a gig into a night out, so you can stay on for a drink after the music finishes.
The bill is Seb Rochford's Finding Ways live, with Fantastic Stranger opening. Rochford is a well-known name in the UK jazz scene, and Finding Ways is his current project, so this is a chance to hear that material live. Fantastic Stranger takes the first slot, and the two acts together make for a full evening of jazz in one of the city's newer spaces.
