World-renowned Celtic musician Brìghde Chaimbeul joins the Scottish Ensemble in a cross-genre performance featuring traditional Gaelic songs, folklore, and Philip Glass's 'Music in Similar Motion' with visuals by Jonny Ashworth.
Scottish Ensemble and Brìghde Chaimbeul play the Bristol Beacon on Sunday 18 October, as part of a UK tour that follows a sold-out world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival. It's a cross-genre pairing: a string orchestra pulled in unfamiliar directions by the sound of the Scottish smallpipes, with Chaimbeul leading the way.
Her new compositions bring the folklore and history of Skye to the fore. There are traditional Gaelic waulking songs, the eerie tale of Spòg Liath ('The grey paw'), the phases of the moon, and the landscape of Scotland's islands. The evening pairs that with a new arrangement of Philip Glass's ambient masterpiece Music in Similar Motion, and visuals by filmmaker Jonny Ashworth, who created Chaimbeul's music videos.
The programme includes Brìghde Chaimbeul and into her dark boundaries and Brìghde Chaimbeul a beak of light, alongside the Glass piece. The show was produced by Scottish Ensemble and co-commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival, Eden Court, and Celtic Connections, with support from PRS Foundation's Beyond Borders, the Leche Trust, and the Cockaigne Fund.
