French organist Olivier Latry, titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, performs Romantic transcriptions and improvisations on the historic Britton Organ, with a pre-concert talk by Jonathan James.
Olivier Latry plays Beacon Hall on Sunday 10 January 2027, his first time performing at the Bristol Beacon. He's the titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, a post he took at 23, and he's spent the years since as one of the most visible ambassadors for the organ. He's played some of the world's biggest venues, guested with top orchestras under renowned conductors, recorded for major labels and premiered new works. Since 2012 he's also been Organist Emeritus at the Orchestre National de Montréal, and he's widely known as an exceptional improviser.
The recital is built around the Romantic organ tradition. He'll play works by Widor, Vierne and Dupré, alongside transcriptions of Rachmaninov, Bach and Prokofiev. The whole thing closes with an improvisation on a theme submitted by the audience, so you can actually have a say in what he plays. It's a debut for him at the Bristol Beacon, a hall that reopened in 2023 and houses the Britton Organ, which Oliver Condy of BBC Music Magazine described as one of the most important concert-hall instruments in the UK.
