A family-friendly Nature Salon led by Professor Michael Benton and Mary Colwell, exploring modern scientific understanding of dinosaurs beyond the image of monsters.
St George's Bristol is hosting a Nature Salon on Saturday 17 October, and this time the focus is on dinosaurs. It's led by two people who know their way around the subject: world-renowned palaeontologist Professor Michael Benton and author and conservationist Mary Colwell. The session is called Dinosaurs - More Than Monsters!, and the whole point is to look at what dinosaurs were actually like, rather than the movie monsters we've all grown up with.
It's a family-friendly afternoon, and they're going to work through the things we usually wonder about. They'll talk about how scientists figure out what colours they were, how they moved, and what they ate. There's the question of whether they had feathers, what their calls might have sounded like, and why birds are their living relatives. It's a fair bit of ground to cover in one go, and the session is built around discoveries and facts rather than just speculation. There's also plenty of room for questions, so if you've got a specific one, you can put it to them.
It's aimed at ages 8 and up, so it's one of those things you can bring the kids along to. The idea is to present dinosaurs as modern science understands them now — as extraordinary creatures in their own right, not as the monsters they're often made out to be. If you've spent your life watching them roar and stomp through jungles on screen, this is a chance to see the real version.
