A morning concert of Hindustani classical music featuring sarod player Debasmita Bhattacharya and tabla artist Zuheb Ahmed Khan, part of the New Sounds Festival.
Debasmita Bhattacharya brings her sarod to Arnolfini on Sunday 15 November, as part of the New Sounds festival presented by Asian Arts Agency. It's a morning concert, with the music starting at 11:30am and doors opening at 11:00am.
Bhattacharya is one of India's most exciting young sarod players, and the sarod itself is an instrument that can move from astonishing subtlety to real power. She's known for balancing classicism with an expansive modern mindset, pushing Hindustani music into the 21st century. The Hindu has praised her playing for its clarity of technique and sensitive approach, and that's exactly what she'll be bringing to the stage here.
She won't be playing alone. Joining her on tabla is Zuheb Ahmed Khan, an acclaimed virtuoso and a leading torchbearer of the Ajrada gharana, whose playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity. Between the two of them, you'll get the sarod's melodic lines held together by the tabla's rhythmic drive, with plenty of room for the kind of improvisation that makes this music work.
