The London Symphony Orchestra performs Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 and Edmund Finnis' Cello Concerto, with Sheku Kanneh-Mason on cello and Sir Antonio Pappano conducting.
London Symphony Orchestra are at Beacon Hall on Saturday 24 October, with Sir Antonio Pappano conducting and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason on the solo. It's one of the visiting orchestras coming to Bristol as part of the 2026/27 Orchestral Season, which names the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as the hall's Orchestra in Residence.
The programme pairs Edmund Finnis' Cello Concerto with Bruckner's Symphony No. 9. Kanneh-Mason gave the world premiere of the Finnis concerto in 2025, and the composer describes it as 'the most lyrical, intense and emotionally direct music that I have written so far'. That's the newer half of the evening; the Bruckner is the big, late-Romantic symphony that's been a staple for decades.
If you want a bit of background before the music starts, there's a pre-concert talk given by Jonathan James — conductor, music educator, writer and presenter — in the Lantern Hall at 16:00, which is free with a concert ticket. The main event follows at 17:00 in Beacon Hall, the flagship venue at Bristol Beacon, which re-opened in 2023 after extensive refurbishment and houses the Britton Organ.
