Jazz concert led by Rory Ingham, bringing together five of the UK's finest jazz trombonists to celebrate the instrument's versatility.
Rory Ingham's Trombone Assembly play Lantern Hall on Sunday 25 October, bringing together five of the UK's finest jazz trombonists for a single night. The whole thing is led by Ingham himself, a British Jazz Awards Rising Star, and the set is built around that five-trombone frontline. It's a rare sight to see that many of the same instrument on one stage, and the night is designed to show off exactly what they can do with it.
The music is brand new, with fresh compositions by trombonist Mark Nightingale sitting alongside bespoke arrangements of jazz standards. Between them, the set moves through a fair few different moods: rich choral textures, swinging big-band sounds, and the kind of intimate small-group interplay you get when the full section drops back. It's that range that gives the night its shape, going from the big, layered sound of five trombones in unison to the smaller, more conversational moments.
That frontline is Mark Nightingale, Rory Ingham, Andy Wood, Trevor Mires and Daniel Higham, backed by Ross Stanley on piano, Sam Quintana on bass and Ian Thomas on drums. It's a high-calibre room: between them, the musicians have toured and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Sting, Jamiroquai, the London Symphony Orchestra, Incognito, Steely Dan and Quincy Jones. Jazzwise called the project 'effortless virtuosity', and La Vanguardia noted its 'splendid richness of sound and an unlimited imagination'.
