Concert by Brooklyn-based lo-fi-folk artist Hudson Freeman at the Strange Brew venue in Bristol.
Hudson Freeman plays Strange Brew on Thursday 25 February, with doors opening at 19:00 and the night running until 22:00. He's a Brooklyn-based lo-fi-folk artist, and this is a headline show with him as the sole bill.
There's a bit of a story to how he got here. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, to Evangelical missionaries, he started writing songs at thirteen after his family moved from the Dallas suburbs to the Kingdom of Eswatini. He later spent his college years in Springfield, Missouri, which he describes as cementing his do-it-yourself midwestern streak before he moved to Brooklyn and his career took off. That DIY background sits right at the heart of the lo-fi-folk sound he's known for.
In terms of what he actually sounds like, he draws on indie influences like Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver. His recent full-length, Folk Artist, and the new song 'If You Know Me' — a moody blend of bedroom pop, folk, slowcore and post-emo — have been the things drawing wider attention lately. If you're familiar with those names, you'll have a good handle on the territory he's working in: quiet, textural indie folk that doesn't shy away from a slower, moodier side.
