An indie musical by Siân Owen set on New Year's Eve 1997 inside a smoke-filled Manchester nightclub, with a live soundtrack of 90s classics.
How Soon Is Now? runs at Tobacco Factory Theatres from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 October, a new indie musical from the Manchester company Box of Tricks. It's written by award-winning playwright Siân Owen and set on New Year's Eve 1997 inside a smoke-filled Manchester nightclub. The story follows Jean, a Welsh outsider, who meets the outgoing Angie and the warm, compassionate Polly, while DJ Spin Jim shapes the night with a live soundtrack of nineties anthems by The Stone Roses, Radiohead and The Smiths.
Director Adam Quayle has highlighted the show's multi-instrumentalist, all-singing and all-dancing cast, and Owen describes it as a love song to music, friendship and courage, designed to make audiences feel they've stepped straight into the middle of a bustling nightclub. It's a production that celebrates Northern voices, and the Bristol run is audio described, with a BSL-interpreted performance on the Friday night.
