Jazz concert by corto.alto, the project of Scottish musician Liam Shortall, blending Afrobeat, hip hop and soul with jazz at The Trinity Centre.
corto.alto play The Trinity Centre on Thursday 4 February, with doors opening at 7pm. The band is led by Scottish musician and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall, who's been working under the name for more than a decade. Formed in Glasgow, the group blends Afrobeat, hip hop and soul with an integral jazz mindset, and they've played over 200 shows worldwide in the last three years.
Shortall pulls from some of Scotland's finest young jazz talent to fill out the sound: Graham Costello on drums, Fergus McCreadie on keys, and a rotating cast of horn players. Their debut album, Bad With Names (2023), was shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize, and the sophomore record 30/108 followed in 2024. Both sit on Ninja Tune, the label they're signed to.
This show is built around a third album, SOME SMALL FORTUNE, which Shortall describes as his most expansive and unpredictably exciting work to date. It's the latest in a run that's seen him pick up the AIM Award for Breakthrough Artist in 2025, as well as Jazz FM's UK Jazz Act of the Year and The Innovation Award. Between the two previous records and this one, the set draws from a growing body of work that spans Afrobeat, hip hop, soul and jazz.
