A new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats at the Bristol Hippodrome, following the annual Jellicle Ball of street cats.
CATS opens at the Bristol Hippodrome on Tuesday 24 November, with the production running through to Saturday 28 November. It's a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, which first premiered at the New London Theatre in 1981 and went on to run there for 21 years and almost 9,000 performances, making it one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history.
Rather than a traditional plot, the show is a choreographed jamboree about the lives of a local tribe of street cats, each with their own name and personality. Once a year they gather for the Jellicle Ball, led by their elderly and respected leader, Old Deuteronomy. The whole thing is based on T.S. Eliot's 1939 anthology Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, and it runs for around two hours and 20 minutes, including one intermission.
For this run, Louise Dearman, Alice Fearn and Rachael Wooding share the role of Grizabella, with Kalisha Amaris as Old Deuteronomy, Jack Wilcox as Munkustrap and Jet Yau as Mr Mistoffelees. It's directed by Trevor Nunn, with choreography by Gillian Lyne and updates by Andy Blankenbuehler. Cameron Mackintosh produced it, and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music.
