Jazz in the Loft gig featuring the renowned jazz guitar legend Jim Mullen at The Tobacco Factory.
Jim Mullen plays The Tobacco Factory on Sunday 15 November, part of the Jazz in the Loft series presented by BLF. It's a guitar-led night with the Glasgow-born player as the sole bill, and he'll be performing with his own organ trio.
Mullen's a name that carries a fair bit of weight in European jazz. He's been playing for more than five decades, and he's known for a self-taught technique that sets him apart: he doesn't use a plectrum, playing exclusively with the flesh of his thumb. That's where his particular sound comes from — a warm, rich, and deeply expressive tone that's become his calling card.
He was at the vanguard of the British jazz-funk explosion of the 1970s and 80s, when he co-founded the chart-topping Morrissey-Mullen with saxophonist Dick Morrissey. Since then, he's worked with a wide range of artists: Average White Band, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Kokomo, Mose Allison, and Gene Harris. These days he tours the world with his organ trio, and he's been awarded the Jazz Lifetime Achievement Silver Medal.
