Concert by British singer-songwriter Beth Orton, performing her album Weather Alive with support from Family Stereo.
Beth Orton plays Trinity Centre on Monday 19 October, with support from Family Stereo. It's her first Bristol date in a while, and she's touring Weather Alive, the record she's been working on for the last few years.
If you've followed her since the start, you'll know the sound she built in the mid-nineties: that particular blend of folk songwriting and electronic beats. It's what got her Mercury Prize and BRIT Award nominations and earned her a following of her own. Her discography runs from Trailer Park and Central Reservation through to Weather Alive, which she produced herself. That one landed on year-end best-of lists from NPR, Pitchfork and The New York Times, with a lot of the praise focused on her modal vocal phrases.
Weather Alive came after a six-year hiatus, and there's a nice story behind how it happened. She installed an upright piano in her London garden shed and built the record around it, bringing in collaborators like jazz poet Alabaster DePlume, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner and bassist Tom Herbert. The songs continue to look at survival, renewal, motherhood and identity, and they'll be the focus of the set.
