The BBC Concert Orchestra performs a programme of American music, including works by Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington, with a pre-concert talk by Jonathan James.
The BBC Concert Orchestra bring Friday Night is Music Night to Beacon Hall on Friday 22 January 2027, starting at 19:00. The evening is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds, so if you can't make it down to Trenchard Street, you can still catch it from home.
The programme takes the orchestra on a road trip through American music, and it's a broad one. There's Leonard Bernstein's overture from Candide, Duke Ellington's Solitude, and Astor Piazzolla's tango La Mufa, arranged by John Adams. Morton Gould's Second American Symphonette is also on the bill, so the set moves from the Broadway stage and the jazz club to the tango hall and the concert platform in one go.
It's part of the 2026/27 Orchestral Season at Bristol Beacon, which also brings the resident Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's Beethoven cycle to the hall, alongside visiting names like Víkingur Ólafsson and Olivier Latry. Beacon Hall itself re-opened in 2023 after extensive refurbishment, and it's now one of the country's finest concert halls, with world-class acoustics and the Britton Organ.
