A traditional New Year's concert featuring waltzes, polkas and marches by Johann Strauss II and contemporaries, performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra bring their New Year's Viennese Gala to Beacon Hall on Sunday 3 January 2027, a matinee that gathers the waltzes, polkas and marches of Johann Strauss II, his family and their contemporaries. It's a traditional programme, the kind of set that would have filled the gala halls of old Vienna, and it's conducted by Tom Fetherstonhaugh with soprano Claudia Boyle joining in.
Among the pieces you'll hear are the Fledermaus Overture, the Thunder and Lightning Polka, the Radetzky March and, of course, The Blue Danube. It's all part of Bristol Beacon's 2026/27 Orchestral Season, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is the venue's Orchestra in Residence. They're also working through a complete cycle of the Beethoven Symphonies with Principal Conductor Mark Wigglesworth, which runs on into the 2027/28 season.
Beacon Hall is the Beacon's flagship venue. It re-opened in 2023 after extensive refurbishment and has since built a reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the country, with world-class acoustics and the Britton Organ. The concert is for all ages, with under-16s accompanied by an adult, and patients in the city's central hospitals can hear it on Hospital Radio for Bristol.
