A roundtable podcast-style event exploring LGBTQ+ community history and archiving, with an invitation for attendees to contribute memories and items to a proposed 'Lavender Museum'.
Nu McAdam and Suchi Chatterjee are hosting Your Lavender Life Part II: Secrets in the Woodwork at The Ledward Centre on Thursday 23 July. It's a roundtable podcast format, so rather than a formal talk, it's a conversation between the guests that you get to listen in on. Joining them are Community Champions, Roni Guetta from Queer Heritage South, and local legend Jane Traies.
Traies is a writer, researcher, storyteller and oral historian who's spent years recording the life histories of the oldest generations of lesbians in the UK. The group will be interviewing each other about collected histories, archiving, and the secrets Brighton has yet to reveal. It's as much about the act of preserving these stories as it is about the stories themselves.
There's a practical side to the night, too. You're invited to bring along memories or physical and digital items — photos, TV programmes, shows — to contribute to a proposed 'Lavender Museum'. There'll also be a 'Write your history here' section where you can write down your own memories. The whole thing is part of Queer Heritage South, a programme powered by Marlborough Productions and made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
