The world’s oldest operating electric railway reopens for its 143rd season with public trains running daily.
Volk’s Electric Railway is set to begin its 143rd season on Saturday, 28 March 2026. Established in 1883 by inventor Magnus Volk, the railway operates along the Brighton coastline, connecting the Aquarium to Black Rock Station. For the opening day, former television presenter Nicholas Owen will be driving the first train of the season. The railway will run daily services starting at 10:15 am. Recently, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Amanda Grimshaw BEM, visited the site to observe the final preparations, which included driver training and safety checks on the electric trains that serve the one-mile route.

The journey includes three stops: the Aquarium, the Halfway station near the Jungle Rumble Cafe, and Black Rock Station. If you are planning to visit, it is useful to know that all stations are wheelchair accessible, although chairs must be folded before boarding. The same requirement applies to pushchairs, and children are asked to sit in the middle of the train compartment. For those travelling with pets, dogs are welcome on board and travel free of charge. The railway also accommodates group bookings for parties of 20 or more and offers options for facility hire.
Tickets for the 2026 season are priced at £5.40 for adults, £3.40 for children aged 5 to 15, and £4.00 for seniors over 65. A family ticket, which covers two adults and two children, is available for £13.10. Residents living in the BN1, BN2, BN3, and BN4 postcode areas can access specific discounts during off-peak hours. While the railway is a paid attraction, it remains a regular transport option for those moving between the Aquarium and Black Rock. It is advisable to check the official website for the daily closing times, as these can vary throughout the season.
