Piano recital by Georgian pianist Taso Kipiani with works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Poulenc, with violinist Iryna Marchuk.
Taso Kipiani is playing at St Mary's Church on Saturday 28 November, with the concert running from 18:00 to 19:00. The Georgian pianist has put together a programme of works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Poulenc, and for part of it he's joined by the young Ukrainian violinist Iryna Marchuk.
It's a wide-ranging set that pulls from a few different eras. You'll hear Beethoven's Moonlight sonata, one of the most recognisable pieces in the classical repertoire, and excerpts from Prokofiev's ballet music for Cinderella. The Poulenc comes in the form of his sonata for violin and piano, which is where Marchuk joins in.
Kipiani describes the whole thing as a popular and engaging programme, and that's a fair way to put it: it mixes a few of the big, familiar names with some of the more dramatic, theatrical stuff from Prokofiev and Poulenc. Having the violin come in for the Poulenc changes the energy of the evening, too, moving from solo piano to a duo for that part of the set.
