Reggae legend Toots Hibbert and his band Toots & The Maytals play Chalk in Brighton with new versions of their classics.
Toots & the Maytals play Chalk on Saturday 5 June 2027, with the set starting at 19:00. The night centres on the band's classics, but they'll be playing new versions of them rather than straight copies.
If you're not familiar with the name, Toots & the Maytals come from May Pen, Jamaica, and are led by Toots Hibbert, one of reggae's true architects. Their 1968 single 'Do the Reggae' is credited with giving the genre its name, and their songs have been covered by the likes of The Clash and The Specials. The group also featured in the 1972 film The Harder They Come.
Their more recent work has seen them collaborating across the board. The album TRUE LOVE brought together a long list of guests: Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, No Doubt, The Roots and Trey Anastasio, alongside reggae icons Bunny Wailer and Marcia Griffiths. Hibbert's voice remains rooted in gospel and still powerful after almost four decades in the spotlight.
