If you haven't come across Tommy WÁ yet, he's a singer and songwriter who works in a fairly distinct pocket. While Afrobeats has dominated the landscape, he's spent his time looking back at mid-20th-century West African folk traditions and reframing them through a blend of indie and retro-soul. It's a sound that draws comparisons to Bon Iver and Michael Kiwanuka, and he's known for a sharp sense of narrative in his writing.
His trajectory took a bit of a turn in 2022 when he was selected for the Goethe Talents programme, which saw him perform at Berlin's Pop-Kultur festival and spend time in the city's creative underground. From there, he caught the attention of the London-based label Dirty Hit, who signed him in 2024 following a breakout set at The Great Escape. This is one of the nights you can hear that cross-continental sound in the flesh.
