A dance party celebrating 90s acid jazz with live percussion, hosted by Russ Dewbury and featuring DJ Snowboy.
The Spirit of Acid Jazz comes to Alphabet on Saturday 7 November, a dance party celebrating the 90s acid jazz scene. It's hosted by Russ Dewbury, with DJ Snowboy on the decks and live percussion from Tim 'Bongos' Mercer and Dal Robertson.
The night is built around the UK clubland sound of the late 1980s, which mixed jazz chops with funk grooves, hip-hop rhythms and soul swagger. That blend went on to spawn acts like Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Ronny Jordan, Digable Planets, MC Solaar and Young Disciples. Brighton was right at the heart of it: Dewbury's 'Jazz Bop' live events used to draw crowds of around 2,000, and his 'Jazz Rooms' club nights ran through the weekends.
DJ Snowboy, the UK's number one Latin percussionist and band leader, returns to the scene after years away. He released early 12-inchers for the Acid Jazz label, played percussion on the Freedom Principle compilation, and worked with James Taylor Quartet, Incognito and Corduroy. In 2009 he published From Jazz Funk And Fusion To Acid Jazz, a look back at the roots of the sound. He'll be joined on the night by live percussionists Tim 'Bongos' Mercer and Dal Robertson, so there's a live element to the set rather than just a DJ.
