A long-standing soul social event featuring two sessions of classic Motown, soul, disco and northern soul music performed by The Soul Survivors.
The Soul Survivors are back with their Famous Soul & Motown Christmas Party on Saturday 19 December, at the Leonardo Royal Waterfront Hotel on Kings Road. It's a long-standing fixture on the Sussex soul calendar, having run for three decades, and it works a bit differently from your usual night out: you get two soul sessions for the price of one. The first, Classic Motown & Soul plus Disco, takes place at the Leonardo Royal Waterfront Hotel, and the second, Northern Soul Floorshakers & Anthems, is over at The KoKo Club in The Queens Hotel next door.
The band on the bill is The Soul Survivors, who describe themselves as the country's top exponents of classic soul. They're led by the powerhouse vocals of Mel Day, and they build their sound around three-part vocal harmonies, a grooving rhythm section, and a top horn section. The set draws on the work of legends like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Marvin Gaye, so it's the classic soul sound you'd expect from a night like this.
There's a fair bit of pedigree behind them, too. The group has worked with Robert Plant, The Temptations, and Martha Reeves, and they've been playing this particular Christmas party for thirty years, so they know the territory. Between the two sessions, you'll get the Motown and disco side of things at the Leonardo Royal and the Northern Soul side at The KoKo Club, with the band providing the live music.
