A satirical and gloriously absurd comedy by Oscar Wilde, directed by Ayshen Irfan, performed at the New Venture Theatre.
The New Venture Theatre is putting on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest from 6 to 14 November, directed by Ayshen Irfan. It's a run that spans more than a week, so there are plenty of dates to choose from if you're trying to fit it around work.
Wilde billed it as 'A Trivial Comedy for Serious People', and that's a fair way to describe it. It's a satirical, absurd comedy set in a sumptuous Victorian world of wit, romantic entanglements and the breaking of social conventions. The story follows Jack and Algernon, who both lead double lives and adopt the name 'Ernest' to pursue the women they love. Along the way, you'll get Wilde's celebrated repartee alongside the formidable Lady Bracknell, the wicked Jack and Algy, and the delightfully eccentric Miss Prism.
One thing worth knowing about the venue is that The New Venture Theatre is run entirely by its members on a voluntary basis, and they don't hire their spaces out to external organisations. This production is part of the company's 79th season, so it's a home-grown show rather than a touring one. You'll find them at Bedford Place, Brighton, BN1 2PT.

As for the timings, there's a performance at 19:30 on Friday, Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and a matinee at 14:30 on Sunday. Just keep in mind there's no performance on Monday 9 November. Tickets are £12.00, and with the run going from the 6th to the 14th, you've got a good few nights to pick from.
