Local historian Louise Peskett presents a talk on the trailblazing women of Brighton and Hove.
Louise Peskett brings her talk, The Fearless and Fabulous Women of Brighton and Hove, to Brighton Unitarian Church on Friday 9 October. It's a look at the trailblazing women who've left their mark on the city, told by a local historian who's spent years digging into the stories that usually get left out of the history books.
Peskett is well-known around here for her Notorious Women of Brighton, Hove, and Kemptown walks, which she started to help people discover the rich women's history hidden in plain sight across the city. If you've ever gone on one of those, you'll know the sort of thing she does: taking the names and dates and turning them into real people with actual lives. This talk does that in a room rather than on the street, so you can hear the stories without having to walk between them.
She's worked as a guide at the Royal Pavilion, Preston Manor, and Brighton Museum, and other historic sites across Sussex and beyond. She's currently with the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust, and she lectures on local women's history, so she knows the city's archives inside out. This is her territory, and she's talking about the women she's spent her career bringing back to the foreground.
