A spoken word event where performers deliver 2-3 minute monologues from existing plays, with audience voting for cash prizes.
The Brighton Slamologue is back at The Yellow Book on Wednesday 30 September, with two more nights following on 28 October and 25 November. It's a monologue slam staged upstairs in the venue's theatre, and the format is straightforward: performers take to the stage with a two-to-three-minute monologue drawn from an existing play. The brief leans towards the quirky and offbeat, so you're more likely to hear something unexpected than the same overdone speeches that crop up in every acting class.
What makes it a slam is the voting. Each week, a handful of audience members decide who walks away with the cash prizes, so you're not just watching โ you've got a say in who wins. It's pitched as a night to enjoy whether you're an acting pro or a complete theatre newbie, and since the monologues are short, the pace stays brisk. If you're a performer yourself, it's a low-stakes way to get a piece of a play on its feet in front of a live crowd.
The Yellow Book does more than just the Slamologue, too. They run other nights like Extra Topping, a comedy bill of sketch, improv, character, physical and musical comedy hosted by Leslie Bloom, so if you're in the mood for something different, there's usually another night on the calendar to pick from.
