An inspiring night of 'spoken word' where artists challenge the status quo through rhythm and flow, featuring Ayan Aden and Naomi Wood.
On Monday, 2nd March, the Studio Theatre in Brighton is hosting a special edition of STATUS FLO to mark International Women's Day. This event focuses on spoken word as a tool for challenging the status quo, using rhythm and flow to explore complex social themes. The night is curated and hosted by AFLO. the poet, a local artist, activist, and academic who is well-known in the city for using poetry to address topics like racism and mental health. It’s an evening aimed at those with a curious or perhaps even sceptical mindset who want to engage with identity and culture in a more direct way.

The guest list for this edition features Ayan Aden, the 24th Birmingham Poet Laureate (2024-26). Her work is notable for how it fuses Somali oral traditions with modern poetic forms. She’ll be sharing the stage with Naomi Wood, a spoken word artist and theatre creator whose performances often mix a sense of rebellion and rage with humour. The event is structured to be powerful and emotive, with previous audience members noting the quality of the curation. It’s recommended for those aged 14 and over, providing a platform for artists who are currently pushing the boundaries of the medium.
Logistically, the evening is set up as a ‘chilled performance,’ which offers a more relaxed atmosphere than a traditional theatre setting. Doors open at 19:15, and the main event starts at 20:00. There is a scheduled 20-minute interval at 20:40, with the night expected to conclude around 22:00. Regarding tickets, there are several price points available to keep the event accessible. Standard tickets are £12.50, but there is a general concession for £10 and a specific £5 rate for those on low incomes. If you’re a frequent visitor to the Brighton Dome venues, the ‘4 Show Saver’ ticket allows you to book four shows for £10 each. Note that a £3.50 booking fee applies to phone and online orders, though this is waived for members.
