Improvised jazz and poetry night with Georgie Jones, Doella, S-Bars and Erin James, plus a wildcard slot, at The Old Market.
SpitNights returns to The Old Market on Saturday 31 October, bringing together poetry and improvised jazz for a single night. It's a pairing that doesn't happen often in Brighton, and the whole thing is built around the improvised side of the jazz — nothing is set in stone, so what you hear that night is what stays there.
The line-up is a mix of poetry and jazz, with georgie jones, doella, s-bars, and erin james all taking turns. There's also a wildcard slot left open for anyone who wants to sign up on the door, so if you've got something you've been working on, you can get it in front of a room. The organisers describe SpitNights as 'a memorable evening of never-to-be-repeated moments — combining the most exciting talent on the poetry and jazz circuit.'
It's a night that sits at the intersection of two scenes that don't always cross over, and the improvised element means the jazz responds to the poetry in real time rather than just playing along. The organisers also make a point of creating a safe and celebratory environment for everyone who comes along.
