A memorial quilt tour honouring lives lost to suicide, exhibited at Brighton Racecourse as part of a UK-wide tour.
Speak Their Name is bringing its memorial quilt to Brighton Racecourse on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, as part of a six-week UK tour. It's a display made of hundreds of handcrafted panels, each one sewn by the family or friends of someone lost to suicide. They've told their stories through fabric, embroidery, photographs and cherished mementoes, and together the squares now represent more than 800 people.
The project started in 2020 when Speak Their Name groups in Greater Manchester and Yorkshire began sewing these panels to preserve the identity of those who died and to bring together families sharing the experience of suicide loss. The Brighton stop is one of seven locations the quilt is visiting across the country before it finishes in London on World Suicide Prevention Day, Thursday 10 September. Ashley Redsell, Director of Speak Their Name, says the display reminds visitors that behind every suicide statistic is a person deeply loved and profoundly missed, and that the tour aims to break down stigma and encourage people to reach out for support.

It's open both days from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road, BN2 9XZ. Tickets start from £8.50, and there's no free access to the quilts, so you'll need to book ahead if you're planning to go.
