A night of tribute music featuring Maximum Who, a tribute to The Who, and Small Fakers, a tribute to The Small Faces.
Maximum Who are playing Black Rabbit in Brighton on Saturday 29 August, with The Small Fakers opening the night. It's a double bill of Mod-influenced tribute acts, both focusing on the 1960s London scene.
Maximum Who describe themselves as the most quintessential tribute to The Who, and they've built the set around the band's hits and rarities from 1965 to 1978. It's a wide stretch of ground, covering the early singles and the big albums of the seventies, so you'll hear the well-known stuff alongside the deeper cuts. They're a four-piece that goes for a faithful recreation of the original sound and stage presence, and they use the same types of guitars, drums, and amplifiers to get there. The aim is to capture the rawness and ferocity of The Who's glory years, and that includes the mannerisms too — the Roger Daltrey-style windmill microphone technique is part of the act. People who've seen them often point to the lead singer's vocal accuracy and the band's way of working the crowd.
They're joined by The Small Fakers, a tribute to the Small Faces. They launched in 2007 and bill themselves as the East End's very own 'fab four', so the whole night stays within that Mod orbit. Between the two, you've got two of the biggest names from that era of British rock on one stage.
