A hands-on, one-day outdoor workshop teaching the art of traditional scything, including setup, sharpening, and cutting techniques.
If you have ever spent time in Stanmer Park and wondered about the traditional methods used to manage the meadows, you might be interested in the upcoming scything workshops. This one-day, hands-on session is designed to teach the art of traditional scything, covering everything from the initial setup and sharpening of the blades to the actual technique of cutting grass efficiently and safely. It is a practical approach to land management that feels quite different from modern, mechanical alternatives.

The workshops are led by Stephan Gehrels, who guides participants through both theory and practice. If the weather does not cooperate, the theoretical parts of the day are moved under the trees or a gazebo, so the session goes ahead regardless of the conditions. It is open to anyone over 16, whether you are a complete beginner, a gardener, or someone who manages an allotment. Just keep in mind that the work does involve some physical movement, particularly for your back, so it is worth considering if that suits you.
There are two dates scheduled for this year: 18 April 2026 and 5 September 2026. Both sessions run from 10:00 to 16:00. The pricing structure is tiered based on your annual income, which is a common approach for these types of community courses. If you earn over £25,000 a year, or are booking as an organisation, the fee is £175. For those earning between £18,000 and £25,000, the cost is £140, while those earning under £18,000 pay £105. There is also a concession rate of £56 available for those who are eligible. These fees cover your tuition, refreshments throughout the day, and all necessary learning materials.
You do not need to own your own equipment to participate, as a scythe can be borrowed for the day. However, if you find that you enjoy the process and want to continue practicing at home, there is an option to purchase a beginner’s set for £184. Since these workshops require a bit of preparation regarding equipment and group size, booking in advance is necessary to secure your spot.
