Scientist

Scientist plays Chalk on Friday 26 February, with doors opening at 19:00. It's an AGMP Concerts presentation, and the night is built around one specific record: Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, which he'll be recreating live.

If you're not familiar with the name, Scientist is one of the big figures of Jamaican dub. He started as a protégé of King Tubby, helping to shape the genre in the late 1970s at Studio One, where he built a reputation for a distinctive mixing style before becoming the principal engineer at Channel One. He redefined the sound of dub with deep basslines, spatial echoes and hypnotic reverb, and in doing so set the blueprint for countless producers who followed. Vampires is one of his landmark albums, and five songs from it ended up on the K-Jah radio station in the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto 3.

That's just one of several cornerstones he's put his name to: Scientist Wins the World Cup, Heavyweight Dub Champion, Scientist meets the Space Invaders, Scientific Dub and Scientist Encounters Pac-Man are all part of the same era. Over the decades he's collaborated with reggae icons like Barrington Levy, Roots Radics, Johnny Osbourne and Augustus Pablo, and he's still working today, bridging dub's analogue roots with the digital world. Hearing Vampires recreated live gives you a chance to hear that studio-born sound played out on stage.
