Saul Williams tours his new album Leap Life, blending spoken word, jazz, hip-hop and ambient sound.
Saul Williams plays Chalk on Saturday 13 March 2027, as part of a headline tour across the UK and Europe. He's touring his new album Leap Life, released through Big Dada, which takes its name from his leap-year birthday. It's his first solo full-length in seven years, and it brings him back to the same label that put out his earliest solo work, 1998's Twice The First Time and Elohim (1972).
Williams is a musician, poet, director and actor, and he made his name with a run of acclaimed records in the early 2000s: Amethyst Rock Star (2001), Saul Williams (2004) and The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! (2007). Leap Life is described as an expansive, genre-defying work built around the idea that the voice itself is the instrument, steeped in notions of ceremony and shamanism. The live show blends spoken word, jazz, hip-hop and ambient sound.
Alongside the album, he's published his first book of nonfiction, Songs My Mother Taught Me (Haymarket Books), which explores the role of the artist and draws on influences ranging from Amiri Baraka to Palestinian hip-hop artists. The book and the record sit side by side as part of the same creative period.
