Open-air Brighton seafront photographic performance and exhibition on meditation by Dr Eva Kalpadaki, part of the Brighton Photo Fringe 2026 Festival.
Dr Eva Kalpadaki is bringing SA TA NA MA to the Brighton seafront from Friday 2 October to Friday 30 October, as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe 2026 Festival. It's an open-air, site-specific photographic performance and exhibition, and it's built around a practice Kalpadaki says helped her keep her balance during the pandemic: meditating by the sea.
The performance itself is something you won't actually see. For eleven minutes, Kalpadaki practises the Kundalini Yoga meditation SA TA NA MA while her camera, programmed to take one photograph every minute, records the changing light and movement without her touching it. In every frame, the sky and the sea take up equal halves. A twelfth minute of silence follows, which means no image ever fills that final spot. The camera acts as the witness and the mediator, so the performance stays invisible, and the resulting series is brought back to the seafront where it was first created.
That's where it becomes an exhibition. The photos are displayed right where they were taken, and you're invited to walk through them as a visual meditation on presence, change and time. It's a quiet, slow-paced piece of work, and because it's outdoors, it's entirely weather permitting.

You'll find it on the Brighton seafront at the level of Lansdowne Place, by the railings and to the right of the Victorian seaside shelter (BN3 1HA). It runs from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, Friday 2 October through to Friday 30 October, so there's plenty of time to catch it across the month.
