A drop-in experience where young girls build radios, write manifestos and explore the world through analogue technologies.
If you are looking for something a bit different to do on the morning of Monday, 11 May 2026, there is an interesting project happening at the Brighton Unitarian Church. It is called the Rebel Resistors Radio Club, and it is designed specifically for girls around 11 years old. The concept is quite hands-on: it is a drop-in session where participants get to build their own radios and write manifestos, using analogue technology as a way to explore the world. It is not just about the technical side of building antennas; the project encourages the girls to think about bigger questions, like how we share space in an uncertain world and where power is held.

What makes this project stand out is the way it connects local participants to a global network. The girls record messages that are then passed on to the next group of 'Rebels' in different locations, creating a sort of relay chain that spans from places like Stoke on Trent to Manila, Hackney, and Lagos. The idea is to build an archive of voices from girls around the world, all sharing their visions for a future that might look very different from the one we know today. It is essentially treating old-school technology as a tool for the future, giving young people a way to think about the messages they want to send out.
The event runs from 10:00 to 13:00, and it is completely free to attend. It is also part of the broader Caravan Assembly, a three-day event organised by Farnham Maltings in partnership with the Brighton Festival, which showcases contemporary performances to international programmers and collaborators. While the core activity is for the girls, the event culminates in an installation where their manifestos are shared with the public, so if you are interested in seeing the outcome of their work, you can visit the church during those hours. It is a straightforward, creative initiative that focuses on giving a platform to younger voices in a very tactile, DIY way.
