A one-off immersive queer club night by Queer Heritage South and Photoworks to launch the Photoworks Festival, celebrating the queer clubbing scenes of the last forty years.
Queer History Clubbing: Framing the Night, Making a Scene takes over Oculist on Friday 20 October, a one-off immersive queer club night that launches the Photoworks Festival. It's presented by Photoworks and Queer Heritage South, and the whole thing is built around celebrating the queer clubbing scenes of Brighton & Hove over the last forty years.
On the decks, you've got Xan (Gal Pals) and Dykes on Decks. The visuals are handled by LadyPat, Boogaloo Stu, Alonglines Photography and Real Brighton, and the night brings in four legendary club photographers to join in. It's a club night, but the focus is on the city's queer dancefloor history, and the photographers' presence ties that back to the images that documented it.
There's a bit of a track record to this pairing. Queer Heritage South is a project powered by Marlborough Productions and made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund; Photoworks is the UK's leading development organisation for photography, a registered charity that's been supporting artists and audiences since 1995. Their previous QHS party, which marked the launch of the Gender Stories exhibition at Brighton & Hove Museum in February 2026, drew over 500 people.
