A portrait photography exhibition celebrating 35 years of Pride in Brighton and Hove, featuring images of community members by Chris Jepson.
Proud Brighton - We Are Community is on at Jubilee Library from 27 July to 15 August, a portrait photography exhibition marking 35 years of Pride in Brighton & Hove. It's a commission from Brighton Pride CIC, and it sits within United in Pride, a joint project bringing together Brighton & Hove Pride, Trans Pride Brighton and Brighton Bear Weekend.
The portraits are by Chris Jepson, an award-winning community photographer and founder of Proud Studios CIC. He's shot people from across those three organisations, and each portrait comes with a single sentence from the person in the photo about what Pride means to them. The series is deliberate about who it puts front and centre: older community members, disabled LGBTQIA+ people, people of colour, and trans and non-binary people — voices and faces that often get left out of Pride photography.
In the library, the exhibition takes the form of nine double-sided panels, each 1000mm wide and 1800mm tall, suspended in the windows. Because they're in the windows, they're on display 24 hours a day, so you can see them even when the library is closed. The images don't stay confined to the building, either — they're also appearing across the city on lamppost banners and on placards in the Pride Parade.
