Concert by Portrayal Of Guilt, an Austin band that mixes nu-metal, alternative rock and trip hop influences.
Portrayal Of Guilt play Chalk on Sunday 15 November, their first Brighton date since their last tour. They're coming over from Austin, Texas, and the show is presented by the venue itself.
The set comes on the back of a new album, Beginning of the End. It's their latest in a run of records that have seen them change their sound with almost every release — they've been around for just under a decade, and they've treated each record like a fresh start rather than a continuation of what came before. Beginning of the End does two things at once: it brings back the raw, teeth-gnashing intensity of their earlier work, but it also pulls in a wider range of influences than they've touched before. Nu-metal, alternative rock, trip hop, and dark ambient all find their way into the mix, and the record balances the groove with the avant-garde.
That tendency to reinvent themselves is a good way to get a handle on what they do. They've built a reputation for not staying in one place for long, and this new album is another shift in that direction. The set will draw from the new material, but it'll sit alongside the older, heavier stuff they're known for, so you'll hear the new record and the earlier records in the same night.
