Exhibition celebrating Ashley Hanson's 100th painting of the Cornish town of Porthleven, curated by Kellie Miller.
Ashley Hanson opens a new exhibition at Kellie Miller Arts on Saturday 19 September, and it's one that marks a proper milestone in his work. The show is called Porthleven 100, and the title tells you exactly what it's about: it celebrates the moment he reached 100 paintings of the Cornish town of Porthleven. It's curated by Kellie Miller herself.
Hanson is a contemporary colourist and landscape painter, and a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. He's well known for his painting courses, which he runs several times a year across Cornwall and Kent, and he's represented by Rise Art, Kellie Miller Arts here in Brighton, and The Rutland Gallery. He also takes part in 'In Conversation' sessions, so he's as much about talking through his process as he is about the painting itself.
This isn't his first time putting work out in the public eye. He's held exhibitions like Cornwall, Colour & Coast at the Old Fire Station Gallery in Henley-on-Thames and Painting the Novel at Linden Hall Studio, and he's taught 'Freedom in Painting' courses. Porthleven 100 sits alongside those, but it's a bit different because it's a celebration of a single, long-running series. If you've ever wondered what happens when an artist returns to the same subject over and over, this is a good place to start.
