Popola Pride

Popola Pride takes over The Oculist on Saturday 1 August, a night built around the rhythms and bass of queer Afro-Caribbean and Latin American culture. It's part of the Brighton Pride celebrations, so it's one of the many parties running across the city that weekend.

The music is the whole point here. The night pulls from a wide range of sounds: afrobeat, bass music, dancehall, electro and Latin rhythms. Rather than sticking to one corner of the dancefloor, it mixes them together, so you'll hear the heavy low-end of bass music alongside the syncopation of afrobeat and the drive of dancehall. The Latin side brings in the rhythms that tie the whole thing back to the Caribbean, and the electro keeps it firmly in the club.

Popola describes the night as being dedicated to the rhythms and bass of queer Afro-Caribbean and Latin American culture, and that's exactly what you'll get. It's a celebration of those sounds and the queer communities they belong to, brought together for one night in the middle of Pride.

It runs from 21:30 until 02:30, so it's a late one that carries on well into the early hours. You'll find it at The Oculist, 2 Boyces Street, Brighton, and it's on from 21:30 on Saturday 1 August.
