Folk singer-songwriter Mynolia performs live at The Folklore Rooms, presented by Love Thy Neighbour. An over-18s event.
Mynolia plays The Folklore Rooms on Saturday 23 January, presented by Love Thy Neighbour. She's a Nashville-based folk singer and songwriter, and this is a headline show rather than a support slot, so it's her name on the bill and her voice leading the night.
Her sound is a bit of a puzzle. She describes it as melancholy instrumentation paired with lyrical surrealism, and the melodic side of things draws from traditional folk choirs and eastern flute music. It's not exactly the kind of folk that sits still; there's a distinct pull between the choral, open-voiced tradition and the more winding, ornamental lines of the flute work she references. The surrealism comes through in the lyrics, which lean into the strange and the unexpected rather than the straightforward storytelling you might expect from a folk singer.
That particular mix has a history behind it. Mynolia has lived across Canada, New Zealand, Berlin, and the remote American South, and she spent two years in the South writing, recording, and recalibrating with field recordings and found instruments. Much of that work ended up on her debut album, All Things Heavy, released through Bronze Rat Records, which brought together tracks from her original self-released EPs. Since then she's signed to the UK label Full Time Hobby and put out the single 'Run Like Hell'.
