Ballad singer and old-time clawhammer banjo player Murphy Campbell plays The Folklore Rooms, presented by Folklore Sessions.
Murphy Campbell plays The Folklore Rooms on Monday 31 May, with support opening the night. She's a ballad singer and old-time clawhammer banjo player rooted in Western North Carolina and the Toe River valley, and this is one of the few times she'll be playing in the city.
At 19, Campbell is already a fast-rising name in the traditional community. She released her debut EP, Murphy Campbell, last year, and her album Revenant preserves more than a dozen ballads her ancestors recorded inside a historic Mitchell County church, barely a mile from where her family settled. It's a record that keeps those family songs alive rather than letting them sit in an archive, and that's the kind of material she brings to the stage.
She's played Scruggs Fest, FolkFest and MerleFest, and has opened for Molly Tuttle and Chatham Rabbits. Roots World describes her as a powerhouse on the banjo, not flashy or virtuoso but with a natural feel for the music that courses through her. The night is presented by Folklore Sessions, and it's for over-18s.
