What makes this adaptation particularly noteworthy for long-time fans is the casting of Daniel Casey. Casey, who originally played Sergeant Troy in the ITV series, has returned to the Midsomer universe, but this time he steps into the lead role of DCI Tom Barnaby. His performance is described as measured and reassuring, bringing a quiet authority to the investigation. The story sees Barnaby and his current partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy (played by James Bradwell), investigating the suspicious death of Emily Simpson in the seemingly tranquil village of Badger’s Drift, where old feuds and eccentric characters quickly surface. The chemistry between Casey and Bradwell is noted as providing some of the most enjoyable, lighter moments of the evening. The wider cast includes familiar names like Julie Legrand as Lucy Bellringer, alongside Nathalie Barclay, John Dougall, and Rupert Sadler, among others.
The production, which has been rated 3.5 out of 5 stars, successfully delivers the 'cosy crime' experience that fans expect. It’s a steady-paced whodunit that focuses heavily on character and atmosphere. While the humor is broad and played confidently, it remains faithful to the source material. If you are looking to catch the remaining performances this week, the show runs nightly at 7:30 PM, with matinees scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday afternoons at 2:30 PM. The entire UK tour is produced by Nicholson Green Productions and Colin Ingram Ltd., ensuring a polished theatrical experience right here in Brighton.
