Martin McAloon (Prefab Sprout)

Martin McAloon is playing The Brunswick on Sunday 18 October, as part of his Steve McQueen – Slight Return tour. He's a founding member of Prefab Sprout, and this is his first Brighton date since his previous run of shows, Two Wheels Good. The new tour is built around visiting the cities and venues that didn't make the cut last time, so if you missed him then, this is the one to catch.

The set is built around Steve McQueen, the band's 1985 album, which he'll be playing in full. Around that, he's pulling a wide selection from the Prefab Sprout catalogue, reaching back through more than 40 years of his brother Paddy McAloon's songwriting. It's a good way to hear the record as a whole, with the deeper cuts and the better-known songs sitting side by side.

McAloon describes the show as intimate and warm, and that fits the way he's approaching it. He's one of the people who helped shape the sound of the band in the first place, so these songs are coming from someone who was there when they were being made. Hearing them played by one of the original members gives them a different kind of weight than a cover version or a tribute.
